Storytelling As Dialogue

Storytelling has always been an important way for LGBTQ+ people to communicate with each other, share their experiences, and pass down LGBTQ+ histories to younger generations. Participants in the Fall 2023 semester of The LGBTQ+ Intergenerational Dialogue Project focused on storytelling as a form of dialogue. We listened to recordings and podcasts of LGBTQ+ people from different decades and identities telling stories. We visited Gerber/Hart Library & Archives – the Midwest’s largest LGBTQ+ community archive – to seek inspiration for deciding what of our own stories we want to tell. We learned how to craft our stories with a professional queer storyteller, and then developed our stories over several weeks in intergenerational pairs and small groups.
